Arts Psychotherapy

Why come to Psychotherapy?

Life can throw up a whole range of challenges. Sometimes it can be wise to seek out professional support with someone skilled and objective in managing emotions and thinking processes. This can allow you to be supported to identify, release and transform what you need to in yourself, and move through any difficulties you are facing.

What is Arts Psychotherapy ?

Arts Psychotherapy is a process of personal exploration through talking and using different art forms that can help you understand yourself more fully and how you respond in relationships and situations.

I offer a safe, non-judgemental therapeutic relationship and environment within which you can feel understood. When you feel fully met and understood by the therapist,  you can allow for a shift in feelings and perception. My role is not to give you advice, but to support you in your own process of becoming more self aware with the aim of easing and resolving concerns.

Why the Arts?

Much of what motivates us in our lives, who we choose as partners and friends, and how we respond to situations, comes from our unconscious, which means out of our conscious awareness. By becoming aware of our unconscious, we have the opportunity to understand what may limit us and to change things to help us live in ways we would prefer. Talking is important to support accessing our unconscious. But sometimes we need to by-pass our cognitive processes that can keep us stuck in negative patterns of thought and behaviour, to really bring about shift and transformation. In other words to drop down from our minds into the non-verbal wisdom we hold.

I can teach you how to connect with this unconsious part of you through a series of techniques that you can use in your life to support you.

This is where the magic of the arts can facilitate us to do this.

As an Integrative Arts Psychotherapist, I call upon my toolbox of different therapies and arts to support your needs in any given moment in the best way I can. I invite you to work with:

  • Body awareness

  • Mindfulness techniques

  • Painting

  • Clay

  • Writing

  • Music

  • Sound

  • Movement

  • Drama

  • Puppets

  • Objects in a sand tray

These art forms can help you to communicate with the symbolic, and the metaphor, like when you dream. In this way you can enter into the language of the unconscious. It is in this realm that you can experience the riches of a felt, sensed, insightful understanding, that bring meanings to yourself you had previously not been aware of knowing. This can enable you to realise your true self worth that may have been undermined for any number of reasons in your past. Through this process it is possible to then live your life with more meaning, love, value and authentic empowerment.

Areas of concern I can support you with:

Depression, Anger, Bereavement, Anxiety, Abuse, Trauma, Eating Disorders, Addictions, Life Changes, such as the Menopause, Ageing, Relationships, Marriage, Separation, Divorce, Parenting, Terminal and Other Life Affecting Illnesses, Self Esteem, Jealousy, Lack of Confidence, Existential issues: Meaning of life, Spiritual Living.

You can change the way you live your life.

Supporting you to wellbeing through the arts
